NVIDIA Nsight Visual Studio Edition

NVIDIA Nsight Visual Studio Edition is an application development environment for heterogeneous platforms that brings GPU computing into Microsoft Visual Studio. It allows developers to build and debug integrated GPU kernels and native CPU code, and to inspect the state of the GPU and memory. The tool is freely available through the NVIDIA Registered Developer Program and as part of the CUDA Toolkit. The current release is version 2026.3.

CUDA Debugger Capabilities

• Source-level debugging: CUDA C/C++ source code can be debugged directly on current GPU hardware. Native Visual Studio CPU code and CUDA GPU code can be debugged within the same session, using the familiar Locals, Watches, Memory, and Breakpoints windows.
• Watch and source views: The Watch view displays source variables along with PTX and SASS registers, supports expressions, and shows updated values in red. Source, PTX, and SASS are correlated, and stepping and breakpoints can be applied in source or disassembly.
• Breakpoints: Source, SASS, function, conditional, and data breakpoints are supported for native CPU and CUDA C/C++ code. Conditional breakpoints can operate on source variables and PTX or SASS registers. Process and thread selection is available, and full GPU and CPU state is shown at a breakpoint.
• Warp and register inspection: The Warp Info view lists active warps, one per row, with color-coded states, filtering, and freeze modes for controlling other warps. The GPU Registers view shows PTX, SASS, predicate, conditional, and uniform registers, can be configured to hide or show register sets, and supports copying to the clipboard. Registers not supported by the architecture are hidden.

Integration with NVIDIA Developer Tools

The NVIDIA Nsight Integration extension provides access to NVIDIA Nsight Compute, an interactive CUDA kernel profiler, NVIDIA Nsight Graphics, a frame debugger and profiler for graphics applications, and NVIDIA Nsight Systems, a system-wide performance analysis tool. When these tools are installed alongside the extension, they appear under the NVIDIA Nsight menu in the Visual Studio menu bar. The debugger also supports OptiX applications.
